Meaning Of Ethics

Ethics can be defined as a system of principles and moral rules which guild the conduct or principle of a person. It refers to moral principles which control or influence the behavior of a person or the conduct of the affairs.

We can talk of professional ethics or business ethics. This refers to moral principles involved in practicing a profession like medicine, engineering, teaching etc. When we talk of mean the moral principles that should guide or control the activity of procuring and use of chemicals. Chemicals are products of laboratory processes involving reactions and changes. Chemical are used for further productions and manufacturing especially in industries. Chemical possess certain qualities which make their production, not only dangerous and risky but also make their handling and use to be done with much caution.

Ethics Of Sourcing Chemicals

The following are the ethics of sourcing chemicals:

1. Purchasing Of Chemical From Licensed Chemical Vendors:

Not all chemical vendors or distributors are registered and licensed. Users of chemical products should ensure they obtain their chemicals from the right source. Distributors must adhere to the following sourcing ethics:

a. Sourcing products in a responsible manner.

b. Working with suppliers to improve their social and environment practices.

c. Providing clear guidelines to purchasing officials.

d. Protecting corporate reputation i.e. the reputation of individual business and brands.

2. Good Handing Techniques:

Chemicals must be handled with utmost safety caution to avoid it affecting the environment and individuals living in it. Handling begins from the point of production to its distribution.

3. Good Distribution:

Good distribution aims at providing customers with quality product value for money. Marketers should operates according to standard distribution practice approved by the right authority, example, the NAFDAC-National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control. SON- Standard Organization of Nigeria etc.

4. Proper Disposal:

Disposal of chemical waste or substances should be carried out with respect to the environmental protection laws. This requires that:

a. All containers submitted for disposal must be clearly labeled.

b. Hazardous chemical waste should be disposed by right authority.

c. Household users should be adequately informed on how to store, handle and dispose chemicals.

5. Hazardous Chemical Storage And Management:

Chemicals that are highly hazardous should be properly stored to avoid exposure to human contact and the environment.
