Cultural Integration Of Nigeria: Concepts And Roles

Cultural integration is important in Nigeria because, the country consist of several cultures, people who have different ways of life as seen in Ibo, Yoruba and Hausa are bound to behave differently. Such behaviour can be a source of conflict. Therefore it becomes necessary that people in Nigerian society must understand each other’s way of life.

The infiltration of European Culture has even added more problems and has become mixed up with local culture. The problem of integrating the various aspects of Nigerian culture is that established way of life is difficult to meld and merge.

Nevertheless, the people of different ethnic groups in Nigeria should be given the orientation to feel that they are citizens of a united Nigeria, then they will weave together some common framework of cultural patterns and nationalistic loyalties which will foster positive national integration.

The Role Of Culture In National Integration

In Nigeria, there is problem of national integration and cultural nationalism has been identified as the only way to achieve national integration.

The militant movements of cultural nationalism will help very much in development of national integration in Nigeria. e.g. The Oha-na-eze, The Afenifere, and Arewa groups. It is important to note that closing of cultural gap between various ethnic groups in Nigeria by orientating the people to know and feel that they are a citizen of one sovereign, indivisible and indissoluble united Nigeria, then they will weave together some common framework of cultural pattern and nationalistic loyalties which will foster positive national integration and development.

Then different geographic and ethic cultural identities can easily flow from one group to the other in effort to evolve the productive process of social communication such a fruitful social communication will promote national solidarity and political party will emerge to control support in all the 36 states of the federation of Nigeria without any special cultural affiliation to any particular ethnic groups in the country. E.g. PDP. These trends are very crucial in the process of achieving national integration and development in Nigeria.
